CHAPTER NINETEEN

Didier was dressed up a step today, in the finer brown suit he had brought with him when he left most of his wardrobe and such in storage at the German embassy in Cairo. At least no one would steal it, but he would be required to ask the Germans to get it all back. Probably that would require Schwarzenberg and Reiher be alive accompanying him.

Or a really good story about their demise and how he had barely managed to escape with his life.

He looked across the space to where that damnable Fraulein sat and smirked at him. The engines were running hard and loud, making conversation somewhat difficult, which was a relief.

She had dressed for the chase as well today, if you wanted to call it that.

Gray riding jodhpurs that seemed too small, such that they were almost skin tight and tucked into black leather riding boots. She had a double-breasted coat that matched, but had left it folded over a chair in back, so she could show off a white shirt that should normally be buttoned up higher than the button on a line with her nipples.

Reiher’s cleavage seemed to be aimed at him like a trap this morning. Didier knew that Bertrand liked Rubenesque women, but he could not bring himself to find her attractive. Certainly the face was beautiful enough, and the wavy blond hair did not distract all that much.

He even had a saucer hat inverted on the bench next to him as he sat and quietly read a book that Didier hadn’t noted the title of before now.

“What would you have done, had you been successful before now, Doctor Beauchêne?” Reiher asked, uncrossing her legs to lean forward in such a way that for a moment he was certain he could see her navel.

Didier focused on her eyes and kept himself from grumbling at the woman. Or from matching her forward stance. That would put their faces perhaps thirty centimeters apart. Useful for conversation in the noise of the aircraft, but he could already smell her perfume from here.

He composed a thought and studied her.

“Overthrown the Third Republic and instituted a fascist one to replace it, in much the same manner as Mussolini or Hitler,” Didier replied. “A Third French Empire, as it were, perhaps like the first Bonaparte, but more likely a Fourth Republic of some sort, since we would need leaders to guide the fools into a more modern understanding of their place.”

“And the Man With No Face?” she asked, still focusing her charisma and physical assets on him in a manner that made Didier concerned that she was about to climb into his lap. Or pull him into hers.

“Both Shirazi and I are convinced that he is an alien,” Didier said. “That
